7 Benefits of Small Group Classes for Young Singers

Why choose small group classes for your young singer? Small group classes offer a safe and comfortable space for young singers to explore their primary instrument – the voice.

Our singing voice is a personal and intimate part of our being. Private one-on-one lessons can be scary and a little nerve-wracking for some young people; particularly at the beginning of their music education journey. Singing by yourself can make anyone, especially a young child, feel vulnerable and exposed. We understand these concerns and ease them in a fun, engaging and collaborative environment.

There are many benefits to joining a small group class for young singers. Here are the top 7 (and yes, I love alliteration):

Confidence

The ultimate goal of group voice classes for young singers is to build confidence. Confidence builds when the environment is safe, supportive and collaborative. As singers work together to build new skills in vocal technique, musicianship and performance, they build an intrinsic confidence that transfers into many other areas of their young lives.

Collaboration

Singing with friends is just plain fun. Exploring and discovering the voice with like-minded peers builds a sense of unity and togetherness. We draw inspiration and comfort from working with others. Collaboration allows children to feel safe to take risks and try new things.

Community

Through collaboration, young singers build community. They encourage and support one another, creating a sense of belonging. A community celebrates one another’s progress and accomplishments. Through performance opportunities, young singers learn that sharing their artistry with others – their larger community – is truly a gift. Not something they should fear.

Connection

When singing, young singers become more aware of their body. They create a greater connection with, and appreciation for, their body and unique vocal instrument. As singers, our body is our musical instrument. Our bodies can do amazing things!

Communication

Young singers learn to be expressive and effective communicators through the art of singing. As singers, we are communicators. We have a story to share with our audience. Singers learn to use their voice, lyrics, face and body to authentically communicate their story or message.

Creativity

As artists we strive to be creative and innovative. Class themes are intentionally chosen to encourage creativity, curiosity and imagination!

Competence

Through the exploration of a wide range of repertoire, singers develop a solid foundation in vocal technique, and the acoustics of singing: posture, breath, phonation, resonance and articulation. Combining technique, artistry and A LOT OF FUN, singers develop a healthy approach to singing and a calm ease in performance. Skills that will hopefully lead to a passionate life-long engagement with music and the arts.

Keep singing!
