October always feels like a burst of possibility — from jack-o-lanterns to sunflowers to pumpkin-spiced everything — but beyond the seasonal glow, orange represents optimism, independence, adventure, creativity, and fun. What a perfect energy to carry into our artistic journey this month.
Confidence and self-trust are not things we’re magically born with — they are built through exploration, experimentation, and a willingness to try. Now that we’re settled into our lessons and rehearsals and the music is well underway, this is the perfect moment to lean into creativity. To take artistic risks. To let your true colours show. ☺️
October’s Colour: ORANGE
This Week’s Focus Word: CREATIVITY
Creativity in the Wild
One of my favourite things about this season is how naturally creativity appears all around us — in hand-crafted Halloween costumes, themed treats, spooky doorways, and unexpected ideas that make us smile. It reminds me that art doesn’t always start in the practice room. Sometimes, it starts when you listen.
Have you ever caught yourself singing a song — without realizing it? Maybe the lyrics or melody keep looping in your mind while you’re driving, walking, or brushing your teeth! That happens to me all the time. When it does, I try to pause and listen more intentionally.
→ What are the words?
→ Why this song, right now?
→ Is it saying something I need to hear — or express?
So often, the message is exactly what I needed. And just like that — creativity sparks itself. This week the lyrics have been, “He who began a good work in you, will be faithful to complete it in you.” And they are exactly the words I needed to be reminded of. 🙃
5 Playful Ways to Get Creative This Week
I encourage you to get creative and playful this week. Here are some suggestions to help you get started, but I’m sure you have plenty more ideas!
Change the dynamics or tempo of one of your songs — just a little. Make it yours. (You don’t have to sing it exactly like Taylor. 😉)
Add a run or riff to a long held note for surprise, colour, and sparkle.
Sketch or paint a visual representation of your song — let shape and colour reveal new emotion and forms of expression.
Shift the genre — what if your pop song gently leaned country? Or gospel? Or jazz café at midnight? Give it a try and have fun!
Write a short poem or lyric and set it to a familiar tune — or improvise something completely new.
There is no wrong answer — only curiosity and a willingness to try.
This Week’s Creative Challenge
The next time you catch yourself humming or singing something unconsciously — STOP. LISTEN. WRITE IT DOWN.
Let that exact song — and its mood, its message, its why now — inspire a creative choice in your music this week.
Your inner artist is always speaking. This week, give it room to play and explore.
Keep singing,
Andrea “listening for the song within” Donais
