👉🏻Unveiling The Fascinating Reasons We Sing!

Have you ever noticed how music can be a mirror—or a mask?

It’s one of the most curious things we observe as voice teachers: the way singers of different ages choose their songs.

It’s not random. It’s not just about style or genre. It’s about how they see themselves in the music—(or how they’d like to).

The Mirror and the Masquerade

Working with voice students across the ages is a beautiful study in contrast. Adults and adolescents often approach their vocal journey with different lenses—and once you notice it, it’s hard to unsee.

For the adult singer, music must feel like a mirror—something reflective, true, personal. If the lyrics don’t echo a lived experience or a feeling they’ve walked through, they’ll pass on the piece entirely. Adults are searching for resonance, for truth. They want to tell their story, not someone else’s. And when they find the right song? It’s electric. Vulnerable. Brave. A conversation between their voice and their life.

Adolescents, on the other hand? They step into the masquerade. The melody, the rhythm, the groove—that’s what lights them up. They’re drawn to sound before story. If the melody soars and moves them, they’ll memorize it in a heartbeat—lyrics and all—without even thinking about what they’re singing. Their connection to the music is emotional, but it lives in the line and lift of the musical phrase, not in the narrative. And here’s the magic: young singers love stepping into someone else’s shoes. They’re not looking to tell their own story yet—they’re still discovering who they are. Singing gives them permission to explore, to pretend, to try on new identities for a moment or two. It’s exhilarating. And safe.

Two Pathways, One Truth

Whether a singer is uncovering their voice as an adult or discovering it as a teen, the path is powerful. At Donais Studios, we honour both journeys. One isn’t more valid than the other—they’re just different doors into the same beautiful house.

Some students need to sing their story. Others need to play inside someone else’s.

And in both cases, something special happens: the Artist Within comes alive! Confidence blooms. Self-trust and self-expression flourishes.

To Sing Is to Feel Alive

Learning to sing isn’t just about pitch and breath and tone. It’s about connection. It’s about feeling something and finding freedom—whether in the mirror or behind the mask.

So we choose repertoire carefully. We listen closely—not just to the voice, but to the heart behind it. Because when the right song meets the right singer? That’s when the magic begins. ✨

Keep singing,

~Andrea “feeling alive” Donais
