🎵 Protect Your Voice Like a Pro! 🎵

I didn’t always put my vocal health first.

When I first started teaching, I would be two weeks into the school year and—without fail—I’d lose my voice.

Even worse, I’d end up sick with a cold or sinus infection that would knock me off my feet.

In the whirlwind of getting started with new students, new routines, and high-energy days, I would push through—no warm-ups, no cool-downs, no exercise, not enough sleep, and my vitamins and nutrition… way down on the list of priorities.

It didn’t take long to realize that if I didn’t put my vocal health and overall wellness first, I was no good to anyone—especially the students I cared so deeply about.

The reason I teach is because I truly can’t wait to serve. To show up. To give. To connect.

So now? Vocal health comes first—always.

And I want the same for you.

Whether you’re preparing for a performance or audition, lighting up the stage in a professional production, or singing your heart out in the car on the way to work, one truth remains the same: your voice is an instrument worth protecting.

At Donais Studios, we believe your voice is powerful and personal. From emerging young artists to seasoned professionals, these six vocal health habits are ones we encourage every singer to build into their routine. They’re the foundation for longevity, confidence, and artistic freedom.

Here are 6 expert-backed ways to protect your voice and keep it at its best—every day.

1. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

Your vocal folds are at their healthiest when they’re well-lubricated. Drinking water throughout the day keeps your voice flexible, responsive, and resilient.

💧 Aim for at least 6–8 glasses of water a day.
đź’§ Use a humidifier during dry seasons or when indoor heating kicks in.
đź’§ Limit dehydrating drinks like coffee and alcohol, especially before rehearsals or performances.

Hydration isn’t just a habit—it’s a form of vocal self-love. Remember it can take up to four hours for the water you drink to reach and hydrate your vocal folds!

2. Warm Up (and Cool Down!) With Intention

Think of your voice like an athlete’s body—it needs preparation before exertion and gentle recovery afterward.

🎵 Begin your singing session with gentle warm-ups like lip trills, humming, or sirens.
🎵 Finish with a vocal cool down—descending slides, light humming, or soft vowels.

These small rituals prepare your voice for expression, prevent wear and tear, and increase stamina.

3. Use Healthy, Sustainable Technique

Good technique doesn’t just sound better—it keeps your voice safe and in optimal condition.

At Donais Studios, we help singers develop foundational skills that support freedom, power, and authenticity without strain.

✨ Prioritize breath support and limit (better yet – release) tension.
✨ Build resonance and alignment for natural projection – not force, strain or tension.
✨ Work with a teacher who understands your goals and your voice.

Your vocal technique is your toolbox—treat it as such and fill it wisely.

4. Rest is Practice, Too

Your vocal folds need recovery time just like any other muscle. Rest is not a weakness—it’s a strategy.

🌙 Schedule intentional vocal rest after big rehearsals, gigs, or long days of speaking.
🌙 Listen to your body—don’t sing through hoarseness or pain.
🌙 Silence can be sacred—use it to recharge your voice and creativity.

Rest is the reset button your voice will thank you for.

5. Steer Clear of Vocal Enemies

Some habits may seem harmless but can cause lasting vocal strain and damage.

đźš« Avoid smoking, vaping, and excessive throat clearing.
🚫 Whispering can be surprisingly damaging—opt for soft, supported speech instead.
đźš« Be mindful of shouting over loud environments, which puts your voice at risk.

Protecting your voice is part of protecting your artistry.

6. Care for the Whole Artist—Body, Mind, and Spirit

Your voice doesn’t exist in a vacuum. When your body is energized, your mind is calm, and your heart is open, your voice follows.

💛 Get plenty of sleep—fatigue shows up in your vocal tone and stamina.
đź’› Eat foods that nourish your body and support energy and immunity.
đź’› Incorporate stress-relieving practices like breathwork, movement, yoga or journaling.

Your artistry begins with your wellbeing.

Let This Be Your Daily Reminder

Every time you open your mouth to sing, you’re sharing a piece of yourself. That deserves care, intention, and grace.

Whether you’re performing in front of thousands or singing a lullaby to your child at bedtime, your voice matters—and how you care for it matters too.

So today, take a moment to drink some water. Breathe deeply. Hum gently. And remember: vocal health isn’t a checklist—it’s a lifestyle.

Let’s continue to ignite, discover, and share the Artist Within—one healthy note at a time.

Keep singing,
