🎤 Singing Should Feel Good!

You’ve heard the phrase “No pain, no gain,” right?
Well, let me be clear—that does not apply to singing. Ever.

Singing should feel good.

Yes, building vocal freedom and ease takes effort and sometimes a little emotional discomfort (like pushing beyond your comfort zone). But physical pain? That’s never part of the process.

If a song feels good to sing—really good—there’s nothing like it. That’s where the magic lives. ✨
And no, this isn’t some “woo-woo” approach to singing. 😂

If your voice teacher regularly asks, “How did that feel?”, it might surprise you at first. But here’s the truth: only you can truly know what feels good in your voice. A teacher can hear, observe, and guide—but the sensations and signals come from your body.

When you discover that song that hits the sweet spot in your range, when your technique and emotions align—that’s the moment everything clicks. You feel it, deeply. You know it. (IYKYK, am I right? 😉)

But if you’re feeling tension, strain, or discomfort when you sing, it’s time to pause, breathe, and get curious.

Here are some areas you might gently explore:

🔍 Musical & Technical Possibilities

  • The key may be too high or too low for your natural range, creating unnecessary strain.

  • Your song choice could include challenging passages that push your current comfort or technical ability or stamina.

  • Your breath support may not be fully engaged yet, causing your throat or neck to engage to try and “help”.

  • Your posture or alignment might be restricting airflow or vocal freedom.

  • You might be singing while fatigued or without a proper warm-up.

  • There could be some jaw, tongue, or throat tension sneaking in (very common).

  • You may be using a resonance strategy that isn’t working for your voice (like “pushing” for volume).

  • Your registers might not be blending smoothly, especially in transitions.

  • You could be forcing volume rather than relying on resonance and breath support.

  • Over-articulation of tricky consonants or unfamiliar vowels might be creating tension.

💛 Mental & Emotional Possibilities

  • You might be feeling nervous or anxious, especially when singing in front of others or in a new environment.

  • Perfectionism or overthinking could be getting in the way of ease, freedom and connection to the lyrics or music.

  • If you’re still gaining confidence in your technique, your body may be holding tension as a way to feel “in control.”

🌍 Environmental & Habitual Possibilities

  • You could be singing in a space that doesn’t feel comfortable, which impacts your physicality.

  • Your voice might be affected by vocal health factors like dryness, allergies, or illness.

  • Your speaking voice habits—especially tension or vocal fry—may be influencing your singing.

  • You might simply need a bit more practice, support, or guidance—and that’s more than okay. That’s what learning is all about!

Everyone’s singing journey is their own. Each voice is unique and special. Your voice has the potential to uplift and inspire others. Be gentle with yourself. A big part of the singing process is learning to trust your voice and your body, and letting go! Singing should feel good. If it doesn’t – pause, breathe and get curious.

Keep singing,
